Bairnsdale celebrates greater access to justice services

Friday, December 09, 2011

Bairnsdale residents now have better access to crucial justice services at the one location following the completion of the new and expanded Bairnsdale Justice Service Centre.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan joined Member for Gippsland East Tim Bull and representatives of the Department of Justice and the Gunaikurnai Land and Water Corporation to officially open the new facility in Bairnsdale today.

Mr Ryan said the Bairnsdale Justice Service Centre would offer a range of benefits for both Justice staff working at the facility and for the 44,000 residents in the East Gippsland Shire.

“The new centre will house staff from Community Correctional Services, Sheriffs Operations, the local Aboriginal Justice Action Committee and Births, Deaths and Marriages services, with visiting staff from Consumer Affairs Victoria, Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria and Responsible Alcohol Victoria,” Mr Ryan said.

“The Bairnsdale Justice Service Centre is one of four servicing the Gippsland region with facilities also located at Morwell, Korumburra and Sale and outreach services available in Warragul, Wonthaggi and Orbost.”

Mr Bull said the $650,000 expansion of the Bairnsdale Justice Service Centre would bring services under the one roof making it easier for Justice agencies to work together to deliver better outcomes for the region.

“The project has increased the size of the building by more than double, extending into the shop next door as well as moving the façade of the building forward,” Mr Bull said.

“The more spacious and user-friendly work environment can accommodate up to 12 staff with room for visiting staff when required, which will ensure better access for people in need of justice services.”

Mr Ryan said the regionalisation of Justice services had supported an increase in the number of clients using Justice offices for advice and assistance.

“There are now 18 Justice Service Centres and eight Justice Regional Offices operating across regional Victoria under the Department of Justice regionalisation program,” Mr Ryan said.
