Sale Showgrounds is better equipped to host major regional events with the opening of modern new facilities by Member for Gippsland South and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan today.
Mr Ryan said the $600,000 Sale Showground Redevelopment Project included improved equestrian facilities and a new multi-use pavilion that would help attract a range of exciting events to the region.
“The annual Gippsland Show, held each October, attracts 20,000 patrons alone, while more than 240,000 people visit the showgrounds each year for around 26 events held at the site annually,” Mr Ryan said.
“This fantastic project will attract even more visitors to the showgrounds and the Sale region by increasing the size and scope of events hosted at the showgrounds.”
The Sale Showgrounds Redevelopment Project involved:
• the construction of a multi-purpose facility that can accommodate 40 retractable stables;
• a livestock stalls complex that includes a ‘swabbing’ box for use by vets during events, and 20 new open stalls; and
• fit-out of the new hospitality building.
Mr Ryan said the redevelopment project would consolidate the showgrounds as one of the few regional venues that could continue to host World Cup Show Jumping Qualifiers.
“These events regularly attract competitors and visitors from across south-east Australia who stay up to five nights and generate an estimated $800,000 for the local economy through food and accommodation,” Mr Ryan said.
“The provision of on-site powered caravan, truck and van sites will help the Sale and District Agricultural Society broaden its appeal as a major equestrian events facility.
“It will also offer the only reliable all-weather powered exhibition space in the region, providing quality facilities for regional trade shows and markets.”
Mr Ryan said the Victorian Government provided funding of $400,000 towards the project, with $100,000 contributions from the Sale and District Agricultural Society and Wellington Shire Council.
