The development of bike trails and shared pathways across Victoria will be made easier with the release of a comprehensive set of guidelines to assist local councils and communities.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan officially launched 10 information brochures today that provide topic-specific guidance for the development of trails in regional areas.
“The brochures are designed to provide the key requirements for the building of safe and state-of-the-art trails for cyclists and walkers,” Mr Ryan said.
“For the past year Bicycle Victoria has been working on this project to improve the resources available to local councils and communities for building trails and shared paths.
“Bicycle Victoria compiled the information from the Austroads Guides and various other sources into a useable, practical and easy-to-understand format that can be accessed on the internet.
“The online content has been written by technical specialists who will continue to maintain the information and the web links,” Mr Ryan said.
The information focuses on 10 key areas: Path Surfaces, Path Widths, Curves & Bends, Hills & Gradients, Road Crossings, End-of-Path Treatments & Obstacles, Navigation & Signage, Lateral Clearances, Bridges & Boardwalks, and Fences & Safety Barriers.
Mr Ryan said the information brochures would complement the work of VicRoads for cycling requirements and pathway development, providing a resource capable of informing the smallest to most complex pathway queries.
“Development guidelines relating to bicycle and shared-use pathways were previously found in various locations, including Austroads’ Guides to Road Design,” Mr Ryan said.
Mr Ryan said the Coalition Government was committed to the ongoing development of cycling and walking trails throughout regional Victoria.
“The Government recognises the role of pathways infrastructure in making Victoria’s unique natural assets more accessible,” Mr Ryan said.
The State Government contributed $15,000 towards the development of the informative new brochures. The documents can be downloaded from the Bicycle Victoria website at https://www.bv.com.au/general/bike-futures/43833/
