Deputy Premier and Minister for Police and Emergency Services Peter Ryan and Member for Morwell Russell Northe today opened the Princes Freeway at Morwell, following the completion of an extensive remedial works program.
Mr Ryan said the phased opening, which will gradually allow traffic back onto the closed section of the freeway, was in time for the school holidays beginning on Friday 23 September.
“VicRoads has completed all the works necessary to enable the conditional re-opening of the freeway,” Mr Ryan said.
“The re-opening of the freeway today also gives motorists extra time to familarise themselves with the new traffic conditions before the holidays begin.”
Mr Ryan said the freeway had been closed since 10 February this year following constant heavy rain which led to the creation of sink holes and ground movement in the area.
“These repair efforts are a culmination of months of work by the Coalition Government, Victoria Police and the Latrobe City Council in ensuring the freeway is in a safe condition for all road users,” Mr Ryan said.
“All agencies and technical experts have worked tirelessly to develop the best possible solution to enable the freeway to re-open, with constant monitoring and testing of land movement in addition to the drilling of 50 horizontal drains at the base of the Hazelwood mine area.”
Remediation works have included lining of the centre median strips; grout injections into soft spots areas; a traffic management plan to respond to any future movement in the area including variable message signs and two emergency cross-over points; surfacing works and drainage and road surface repairs.
Member for Morwell Russell Northe urged motorist to be patient and exercise safety and caution while the freeway was gradually reopened as there would be some temporary conditions in place during the day.
The freeway’s re-opening is expected to take most of the day and it will be fully open for evening traffic.
