Deputy Premier and Member for Gippsland South Peter Ryan met with local government, business and community leaders in Sale today to discuss opportunities for growth and development in the Gippsland region.
Speaking at the Gippsland Local Government Network Forum and the Committee for Gippsland Business and Industry Briefing, Mr Ryan said the Victorian Coalition Government was supporting a wide-range of projects in the region.
“The growth and economic development of the Gippsland region is of great importance to the Victorian Coalition Government and we will continue to make targeted investments in local infrastructure, facilities and jobs,” Mr Ryan said.
“The Victorian Coalition Government’s flagship $1 billion Regional Growth Fund (RGF) is making a significant difference. So far $14.5 million from the RGF’s Local Government Infrastructure Fund (LGIF) and $2.72 million from the Putting Locals First program has been allocated in Gippsland.
“We have also provided $600,000 for the Gippsland Community Leadership program, to develop the skills of individual leaders in the region and committed $15 million towards the Latrobe Valley Industry Infrastructure Fund.”
Mr Ryan said the Coalition Government had also recently launched the Latrobe Valley Industry and Employment Roadmap, to help guide the region through challenges imposed by the Federal Government’s new Carbon Tax.
“The roadmap is a long-term plan for growth in response to the impacts from the national carbon price on energy intensive businesses,” Mr Ryan said.
“As part of the roadmap’s long-term infrastructure objectives, we are supporting the Gippsland Freight Strategy, which is the region’s vision for managing the diversifying economy and growing freight task.
“The strategy will identify priority areas for investments in infrastructure and regulatory reforms to facilitate access between Gippsland and other areas.”
Mr Ryan said the Coalition Government aimed to support the regions by investing in infrastructure and services, help create employment and improve local facilities.
“Other important local projects that have received Coalition Government support include the Latrobe Airport Infrastructure works ($2.7 million), Port Welshpool Long Jetty restoration ($5 million), and the East Gippsland Water Security Project ($1 million),” Mr Ryan said.
