New govt appointee to drive Sunraysia development

Friday, January 07, 2011

The Coalition Government’s pledge to drive economic development and growth in Victoria’s Sunraysia region will be enhanced by the appointment of a strategic specialist with specific business and industry development skills.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan today announced a Strategic Programs Manager would be based in Mildura to service the Northern Loddon Mallee region.

“This position has been specifically created to engage key stakeholders across the region to deliver a range of services and projects that support economic and community development,” Mr Ryan said.

“The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic locally-based team that will provide strategic advice to the government to progress exciting regional development opportunities.”

Mr Ryan said the Strategic Programs Manager would be responsible for investigating and managing major infrastructure and investment projects under the government’s $1 billion Regional Growth Fund.

“The Coalition has announced $14.5 million towards an upgrade of Mildura Airport and the riverfront and marina development to promote Mildura as a world class tourism destination and attract new investment to the region,” Mr Ryan said.

“The successful applicant will help to drive these initiatives and other worthwhile projects in the Sunraysia region that create new prosperity, more opportunities and better quality of life.”

Mr Ryan said the successful applicant would be employed by Regional Development Victoria (RDV), the government’s lead agency in developing rural and regional Victoria.

“RDV delivers programs to promote business and industry development, works with local government and communities, helps new businesses establish themselves and paves the way for existing industries to grow and diversify,” Mr Ryan said.

Mr Ryan said the position would be advertised early this year and will be filled as soon as possible.
