About Peter

Peter Ryan is the Deputy Premier of Victoria. He also holds the portfolios of Regional and Rural Development, Police and Emergency Services and Bushfire Response.
Peter was elected to Parliament in 1992 when he won the seat of Gippsland South in the Legislative Assembly.
In December 1999 he was elected unopposed as Leader of The Nationals.
Peter previously practised law for almost 20 years in regional Victoria where he specialised in litigation – his passion for politics being based on a belief that every person is entitled to a fair go.
Originally from Lockington in Northern Victoria, Peter commenced legal practice with Gippsland firm Warren Graham and Murphy in Sale in 1974.
He became partner in 1976, managing partner in 1989 and remained with the firm until 1991.
He’s married to Trish and they have three children, Sarah, James and Julian.
As well as his family, Peter’s other interests include reading, music and current affairs.
He is also a keen sportsman who enjoys tennis and golf and is a lifelong and passionate supporter of the Melbourne Football Club.
Peter is passionate about developing positive initiatives which reflect the hopes and aspirations of the 25 per cent of Victorians who live outside Melbourne.
He is absolutely committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for all Victorians, but in particular those within country Victoria.
