About Peter
Peter Ryan was elected to Parliament in 1992 when he
won the seat of Gippsland South in the Legislative Assembly.
In December 1999 he was elected unopposed as Leader of
the National Party.
Mr Ryan previously practised law for almost 20 years
in regional Victoria where he specialised in litigation – his passion
for politics being based on a belief that every person is entitled to
a fair go.
Originally from Lockington in Northern Victoria, Mr Ryan
commenced legal practice with Gippsland firm Warren Graham and Murphy
in Sale in 1974.
He became partner in 1976, managing partner in 1989 and remained with
the firm until 1991.
As well as being Leader, Mr Ryan is Shadow Minister for Rural and Regional Development and Manufacturing, Exports and Trade in the Victorian Opposition.
He’s married to Trish and they have three
children, Sarah, James and Julian.
As well as his family, Mr Ryan’s other interests
include reading, music and current affairs.
He is also a keen sportsman who enjoys tennis and golf and is a lifelong
and passionate supporter of the Melbourne Football Club.
Peter believes The Nationals have two essential roles.
The first is to keep the Labor Government honest in terms of promises
made to country Victorians for the delivery of services and infrastructure
programs.
The second is to ensure the promotion and enhancement of country Victoria
by developing positive initiatives reflecting the hopes and aspirations
of the 25 per cent of Victorians who live outside Melbourne.
Peter is absolutely committed to achieving the best possible outcomes
for all Victorians, but in particular those within country Victoria.
