When you fix country roads, you save country lives.
It is a view backed by leading authorities, including the RACV. But in Victoria, there are still an alarming high number of people that die on country roads.
Despite Labor’s rhetoric, the Victorian Government has failed to provide adequate recurrent funding during the past 10 years to maintain the vital network of regional and rural roads linking major centres in the state.
More funding is needed to for road safety works across regional Victoria including fixing road shoulders, building more overtaking lanes, better line markings and creating more rest areas.
The latest report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has found that the amount of main roads which are classified as ‘distressed’ more than doubled in country Victoria in the preceding four years.
The Victorian Auditor-General has said that country roads were under-funded and with an extra $100 million needed to bring roads up to standard.
