The Nationals move to plug the pipe
On February 10, 2010 the Brumby Labor Government switched on the north-south pipeline.
The pipe has been strongly opposed by The Nationals because it takes water from food producing communities in northern Victoria and sends it to Melbourne.
Brumby Government broken promises
At the 2006 election Labor promised it would not take water from northern Victoria for Melbourne. Then in 2007 it did just that by announcing the north-south pipeline.
Labor then broke key promises to the environment.
John Brumby is taking 20 billion litres held in Eildon to guarantee the health of the Goulburn River and pumping it to Melbourne.
An undisclosed volume promised to the Snowy and Murray rivers is also being sent to Melbourne, along with 14 billion litres which was supposed to go to rivers in the Wimmera.
In August 2009 The Nationals voted to disallow a water order which would have given the Brumby Government the legal authority to take water from northern Victoria.
The Nationals moved to block the water order because it broke key promises made to food producers, the environment and communities in northern Victoria.
Our fight against the north-south pipeline will not stop until we can wind back John Brumby’s north-south pipeline and stop Labor’s policy of taking water from regional communities to pump to Melbourne.
