$240,000 for new community centre in Stawell

Friday, June 06, 2014
Stawell residents will benefit from a new community centre with the help of $240,000 in Victorian Coalition Government funding, Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan announced today.

Speaking in Stawell, Mr Ryan said Shop 108 Main Street would be redeveloped into a modern and community friendly drop-in centre within the central business district.

“The new community centre will incorporate meeting spaces, upgraded amenities, a drop-in centre, family room and accessible walkway,” Mr Ryan said.

“Visiting agencies will be able to make use of the new space and it is anticipated that the Northern Grampians Shire Council’s youth officer will have a presence in the centre.”

Mr Ryan said the Northern Grampians Shire Council owned the unoccupied shop and had consulted widely with the community about the redevelopment.

“The project was identified as the local community’s major priority in the 2009 to 2013 Stawell Community Plan and it has strong support among retail traders in the central business district,” Mr Ryan said.

“The redeveloped centre will play a key role in developing community wellbeing and enhancing the visitor experience in Stawell and the council expects that the project will also encourage new investment in the CBD.”

Mr Ryan said the $240,000 in Coalition Government funding would be provided through the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund’s Putting Locals First program, with the Northern Grampians Shire Council contributing a further $120,000.

“Putting Locals First is a $100 million initiative that enables regional communities to identify local priorities and drive development within their region,” Mr Ryan said.

The Shop, 108 Main Street project is expected to be completed in February 2013.
