Member for Gippsland South and Leader of The Nationals Peter Ryan is encouraging local residents to nominate for The Multicultural Awards for Excellence and Multicultural Festival and Events grants before the September 30 cut-off.

Mr Ryan said The Multicultural Awards for Excellence recognise Victorians from culturally diverse backgrounds who have contributed significantly to the social, political, cultural and economic life of our community.

“Gippsland South has a growing multicultural and multifaith population with many individuals and groups working hard to provide services for the different cultural groups in our community,” Mr Ryan said.

“These groups and individuals often go unrecognised, with the Multicultural Awards for Excellence providing a great opportunity to recognise these hardworking people.”

Mr Ryan said nominations would be accepted in ten different categories including:

• Award for Meritorious Service in the Community
• Premier’s Award for Community Harmony
• Business Corporate Award
• Service Delivery to Multicultural Victoria Awards
• Police and Community Multicultural Advisory Committee (PACMAC) awards
• Victorian Multicultural Commission Ambassador Award
• Victorian Multicultural Commission Media Award
• Victorian Multicultural Education Award
• Local Government Award
• Victorian Refugee Recognition Record (VRRR).

Festivals and Events Grants for multicultural events, such as conferences or festivals held between January and July 2010 that support and celebrate our multicultural heritage and diversity, are also available in the latest round of funding.

Mr Ryan said events held during Cultural Diversity Week (14-21 March) and Refugee Week (20-26 June) will be given priority for this particular round.

Grant applications are currently open and must be submitted by 4pm on Friday 25 September while award nominations must be submitted by 4pm on Wednesday 30 September 2009.

Copies of both applications for these are available from or Mr Ryan’s offices at 54B Cunninghame Street, Sale telephone 5144 1987.
