Victorian flags
Flags are provided through the Department of Premier
and Cabinet, on the recommendation of a State Member of Parliament, to
certain community groups and organisations.
The purpose of this scheme is to give greater publicity to and knowledge
of the state flag. The scheme was initially restricted to school and
youth clubs but has been widened over the years to include other bodies.
There is a general expectation that an organisation requesting a flag
will display the flag on an exterior flagpole or at public meetings.
The organisations must be voluntary, based on philanthropic motives and
have a high profile in the community.
State flags are not provided for individuals (e.g. exchange students).
State flags are not provided for use overseas or to interstate bodies.
Bodies that do not qualify for a free flag may purchase flags from commercial
suppliers. Names of companies concerned are listed in the Melbourne Yellow
Pages.
Loan flags are also available from PSE Branch should any organisation
wish to borrow an Australian flag, Victorian flag or flag of any other
State and Territory for a particular purpose.
